Martians, also known as Ice Warriors are reptilian humanoids native to Mars, their scaly skin and features usually hidden under heavy armour that protects them from harsh weather and from attack. Two types of Ice Warrior are seen; the rank and file Warriors, and an officer class, known as Ice Lords. The main difference between the two is the design of their armour with the Ice Lords wearing a lighter, more flexible version than those of the Warriors. The term "Ice Warrior" was given to them by a human scientific team but is not the true name of their species.

While the average temperature on Mars is about -55 C, Martian surface temperatures range widely from as little as -133 C at the winter pole to almost 27 C on the day side during summer.
