Themiscrya

Themiscrya, is the home of the Amazons. It exists somewhere in the mid-Atlantic, in the area known as the Bermuda
Triangle. Themiscrya is protected from sight by a perpetual blanket of clouds and fog. Named for the walled city in ancient Greece that was their original home, Themiscrya was settled centuries ago, after the warrior race of Amazon women
were hunted and nearly all slain by the Moors and Saracens (female warriors being an affront to their beliefs) after the Roman Empire fell. By this point the Olympian pantheon (and indeed all pantheons) had been waning in popularity and as a consequence power. They were however able to perform one last divine feat. Artemis, Athena, Aphrodite, Demeter, Hecate, Nemesis, Nike, Panaceia, Theia and Themis banded together to raise a land mass from the ocean and shape it into an island which was named Themiscrya (pronounced Them-mes-skreea). The surviving Amazons were transported to the island which would serve as their refuge for the next few centuries. Those same Goddesses then endowed all those living in Themiscrya with mystical abilities. As well as being semi immortal all Themiscryan Amazons possess various degrees of beauty, superhuman strength, speed, stamina and extraordinarily acute senses. The Amazons however only remain immortal while on the island and revert to normal aging while in the normal world. They also have developed high levels of hand-to-hand combat training, mastered over 3,000 years and are experts in the use of various hand held weapons.

Their only city is composed entirely of Greco-Roman architecture from 1200 B.C., and they wear Greek garb, togas, sandals, and period armour. They are fervently religious, still worshipping their gods as living deities. Occasionally the Nereides bring to the shores of Themiscrya young infants who would have otherwise drowned in accidents. Males after being restored to health are sent back mystically to their country of origin. Female infants are kept and tutored spiritually in Amazonian ideals gain their abilities. In more recent times Themiscrya's location came to be known as the Bermuda Triangle. The storms protecting the island would often destroy planes and ships in the area. While the Amazons developed their new civilization on the island, the unknown evil remained imprisoned below. It was kept at bay by giant battlements and Amazon guards, many of whom died over the centuries in the battle to keep it contained.

Hera meanwhile had instituted her own plans separate to the rest of the pantheon. Enlisting the aid of her children Ares and Eris she helped sow war and discord throughout the world. An alliance with Hela and Loki saw Hitler gain the Spear of Destiny and ignite the second world war. Horrified Aphrodite appealed to her fellow goddesses to aid in stopping the war. Unwilling to openly interfere they instead chose one of the Amazons to act as their emissary and endowed her with greater abilities for use in the normal world. Hippolyte enterred the U.S. and through the secret aid of Artemis provided crucial information against the Axis forces. She soon joined the Freedom Squadron being instrumental in their battles in Europe and the Philippines.

Furious Hera and Ares in 1943 were able to remove Themiscrya's protection exposing it to the world. This resulted in a Nazi invasion which was eventually repulsed by the Amazons with the aid of the Freedom Squadron.

After the war ended Hippolyte returned to Themiscrya and with the blessing of Olympus opened the island's shores to dignitaries from the Patriarch’s world, female and male. The Amazons even conducted their own tour of the United States, where they were framed for the murders of several people by Hera’s supporters but eventually proved their innocence.

Among Themiscrya’s main features are:
- The Coliseum, where the Amazons test, hone, and display their skills and prowess.
- The Royal Palace, located at the centre of the island on Themiscrya’s highest elevation, overlooking the rest of the island. The Palace, a grand and regal structure, is home to Queen Hippolyte.
- The Senate Chamber, where the Amazon representatives meet to discuss important issues of the day and create policy for the Amazon society.
- The Temple of the Oracle, adjacent to the Royal Palace and Menalippe’s sanctuary, where the Amazon priestess consults with the Olympian gods.
- The Statue of Artemis, which was created in honour of the goddess who championed their cause. The statue is located in a clearing in the woods and was constructed as the highest, most visible feature on the island.
- The Temple of Hades was built to honour the god of the dead, whom the immortal Amazons do not fear. Enshrined within the Temple are relics of the Amazons who have died.
- The Island of Healing, located on a small island chain near the mainland. This is a tranquil, serene place where pure waters flow and healing herbs grow in abundance.
